A Murder and a Tremendous Mistake…
Journalism is a dangerous job. And those who take it can even end up dying for it.
Jamal Khashoggi, a journalist was “violently murdered” in Istanbul, Turkey on October 2. He was last seen walking into the Saudi consulate to fill out paperwork in order to marry his fiancée, Hatice Cengiz. One of the Turkish senior officials later claimed that, “a member of the 15-man team suspected in the death of Jamal Khashoggi dressed up in his clothes and was captured on surveillance cameras around Istanbul on the day the journalist was killed.” These 15 men are from Saudi Arabia and were summoned by an unknown subject to come and kill Khashoggi.
In the video footage it showed two men (one by the name of Mustafa al-Madani) enter the consulate. And a few minutes after, Khashoggi enters the building and moments later, was claimed to be killed inside, even though they did not find the body. But what puzzled everyone was that the footage showed Khashoggi come out of the building. The authorities later found out that Khashoggi has a “body double” who is Mustafa al-Madani. Madani came out wearing a fake beard, Khashoggi’s glasses and even his clothes. Mustafa al-Madani and the other man that entered with him, was later shown taking a taxi, and getting dropped off at a mosque. From there they immediately went into the restroom and Mustafa al-Madani changed into his clothes. The men later went to a near buy restaurant and threw a plastic bag into the dumpster (which is thought to have contained Khashoggi’s clothes).
And just like that it seemed as if Khashoggi has disappeared forever, his body has not been found, and there are still many rising questions. Such questions might be are: Why wasn’t the consulate building under investigation until days after the murder? And, who summoned the 15-man murder team?
Passionate writers such as Khashoggi, choose to make the hard decision of the profession of journalism. And unfortunately, some people even pay for what they write or talk about just as Khashoggi did. This can happen to anyone, whether you are a famous journalist, or a student writer, you always need watch your back because anything can happen...
I really like your article! Despite the temptation to throw your own opinion in there, you stuck to the facts, and only the facts. I could never have that kind of restraint.
ReplyDeleteThank You! Yeah it was hard not to put my two sense into this...
DeleteI like your news story and think it was written really well! I wish I could have read more about how his death tied into the journalism part of his life, but otherwise it was really good.
ReplyDeleteYou really stuck to the facts in this and gave a good amount of information. I'd heard about this but not learned much and now I know a bit more.
ReplyDeleteI thought that you did a very good job with keeping your opinions out of this, and just stating the facts. Also, I thought that you title for this piece was really good, and was what made me want to read it. In addition, I loved your ending paragraph, and thought that it was a good way to wrap up the piece, and show to young journalists out there that things like this do happen.
ReplyDeleteI like how your writing showed how brave Journalists have o be. Agreeing with the others, you did a nice job of keeping your opinions out of it. Nice job!
